From 11 December 2011 to 6 May 2012, the Groninger Museum will present the exhibition entitled Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century. This exhibition displays the most fantastic Alaïa fashion creations of the last ten years. Alaïa is one of the last major couturiers still active. Tunisian-born Azzedine Alaïa is one of the most important fashion designers of the last decades. The name Alaïa stands for glamour, sensuality, style, cut, self-confidence, comfort and, of course, sex appeal.

More than anything else, I've been into various environment-conscious documentary films recently (I'm even a frequent reader of National Geographic now) - most notably the French series Vu du ciel, hosted by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, enlightened wildlife and landscape photographer personality and enthusiastic environmentalist. He is probably best known for his thorough study on the state of the Earth sponsored by UNESCO, which resulted in a best-selling book sensation Earth from Above, later followed by free exhibitions worldwide and a DVD release. And, while flipping through the latest French ELLE, I came across an advertisement for Paris-based design company Roche Bobois promoting this rug, inspired by Yann's aerial views. Not that I care about rugs that much, but I would love landing on this one...

I'd come across this house a couple of years ago in Dolce Vita magazine and I knew quite instantly that it was love at first sight: a large plot of a traditional rural character and orchands. The basic concept of the house is a joint of two archetypal houses with village silhouettes - a compact shape, pitched roof, regular window openings - which consists of two volumes that complement yet contrast each other. In addition to this stands a garage outbuilding of a similar nature. The concept came from the children's drawings of the house - the maximum simplicity, natural naivete, purity. Four and a half stars out of five, for the not so entirely lovely interiors.

Among the array of earthbound and mundane New York's shows, Thom Browne's latest avant-garde women's offering was like a blow of fresh air - or was it opium?! Think the roaring twenties, tricolore galore, nautical references (mermaid included), Browne's very own cheeky and graphic style with slender, dropped silhouette, extended lengths, sportswear meets couture, comical patterns (rubber ducks!) and patchwork of many different materials and adornments. Basically, everything a genuine depraved newyorcaise could wish for.

I often wonder what my dream house should be like. The following three residential projects realized in Japan might give me a few hints. What do you say?

House in Seya.

Japanese practice Suppose Design Office has completed House in Seya, a multi-storey private residence for a florist in Kanagawa, Japan. Exploring the notion of scale within architecture and nature, the house features an experimental space that is neither room nor garden and is intended to stand as an incomplete design that will grow and change over time.

Situated on a small site in a residential neighbourhood, it was the client's wish to live in a house that could accommodate a variety of flowers and vegetations. By building anouter shell in the form of a large wood shed, the house encloses a double-height space to the front that becomes a buffer zone between the exterior and the interior. The ambiguous area lends a sense of scale to the present nature, incorporating its elements into the architecture itself.

Finished with a bed of broken rocks, the entrance of the house maintains a level of outdoor qualities into the space within the walls. The domestic programs of the house are Oaccommodated in a two-storey volume that is set back and partially sunken into the foundation of the site, resulting in a private living quarter within the wood shed. On top, an open terrace/loft space overlooks the level below and gains a large amount of daylight through openings in the roof and street facade.

House with Eaves and an Attic.

Japanese architects Ondesign & Partners (Osamu Nishida, Takanori Ineyama, Rie Yanai) have completed House with eaves and an attic, a three-level dwelling on a hilly site in Tokyo, Japan. Standing slim and tall, the design features an exaggerated pitched roof that is translated to the form of the interior space.

Located within a cluster of trees on the edge of a cliff, the house is built on the only flat part of the site which measures approximately 4.5 m by 16 m. The design leaves the trees untouched and even incorporates their presence into the structure by letting them grow through the over-extruded roof form. Singular and solid, the roof is clad in a doll house-like fashion with grey shingles. Puncturing the surface interspersedly are a series of picture windows of different sizes which lend the house a playful identity. The extended eaves provides shade as well as controls views from the exterior.

Accommodating extra vertical space, the attic level hosts the main communal programs such as the kitchen and living room. The windows provide views of the trees, inviting the elements of the outside inwards. In a similar manner, the ground floor opens up to the cliff side of the site with floor-to-ceiling glazing. The middle level is kept windowless and provides a generous amount of space for storage.

House in Kitakami.

Located on a quiet residential street in Kitakami, Iwate, Japan is "House in Kitakami", a single family home by Japanese practice Yukiko Nadamoto Architects. Composed of curvaceous and contoured forms, the design is informed by both the internal functions and the external environs.

Consisting of a single, unified space, the dwelling seeks to accommodate the separate and individual pursuits of each family member. Three concave volumes interrupt the otherwise open plan, loosely defining the perimeters of each function and area.

Cantilevered stairs wrap around the bowed white walls, leading inhabitants to the basement, split level office space and private bedrooms on the second level. Emphasizing the sweeping surfaces, the wood-clad steps add an element of sculpture and complexity to the neutral, organic residence.

The sinuosity is also evident on the outside, where a central negative core creates a welcoming entrance and courtyard. An operable translucent curtain fronts the arched facade, allowing the inhabitants to control their exposure and alter their levels of intimacy.

Collection Men Spring Summer 2012

George Harrison: My Sweet Lord

Junya Watanabe presented what to me was the highlight of the season's collections, again. It was clearly inspired by the simple farm life, classic American utilitywear and also by George Harrison's post-Beatles period. The outcome makes me crave for every single piece, to own it, cherish it and to wear it until it's completely worn-out. What fascinates me is the modesty, Junya's esteem for reliability of the utilitarian materials and the coolness of bringing seemingly old-wordly values and unfashionable themes into the spotlight and making them actually highly desirable and powerful - and cool, after all, without any try-hard effort whatsoever. And I'm going all emotional again!

The lawn provided the catwalk, the hedge was the backdrop and the lighting came courtesy of the sun at the Institut National des Jeunes Sourds - the famous Parisian school for the deaf originally founded in 1760.

The shoes were made in collaboration with Tricker's, traditional English shoemaker company.

Menswear Collections Fall Winter 2011 (above) & Spring Summer 2012

Favorite looks from the F/W collection.

So how do you feel about the latest additions to the house of Carven, newly revamped menswear collections under the design direction of Guillaume Henry? I personally like the overall Parisian casual touch to it (which I feel I've been seeing everywhere lately), especially the SHORTS, which come sweetly pleated and wide enough to equally go along with the women's line and here and there resembling actual underpants. In case you're bored, then believe me that I'm not gasping in ecstasy either, but then again, it is a neat start off with quite an understated apparel line. Fingers crossed for a smooth upswing!

The perfect timeless blend of retro and contemporary: Willy Vanderperre, Olivier Rizzo and model Daria Strokous managed to create such a dramatic magic for the new Jil Sander campaign, the pictures just took my breath away when I saw them for the first time.
After all, that collection fully deserved it!

Last Thursday I was given a very special opportunity, something I've been dying to experience ever since I've got interested in fashion many years ago. Quite unexpectedly, by the way even, and to my very surprise, I was announced to be sent to Paris to attend the S/S 2012 Louis Vuitton show. My excitement (which I've held back up to the last moments) was even more intense as this was to be the debut collection under the helm of the amazing Kim Jones, newly appointed creative director of the maison. I've always been a fan of his, ever since he had his own label and then later when at Dunhill. This was going to turn out beyond divinely.

So what was my premiere fashion week presence like? Starting off a bit sarcastically, it meant a hell of increase for my ecological footprint, I mean, come on, a return flight from Prague to Paris plus hours spent in city traffic jams all in one day? It was literally the day of many first-times, so plenty of suspense above all. I was to go on my own, I was scared I won't make it on time, miss my flight or something.

The show took place in a lovely spacious greenhouse within Parc André Citroën in the 15th arrondissement (I could not resist putting it here, ha!). I arrived some minutes late but people were still pouring in, greeting one another, chatting wildly and boasting their dandy outfits. Probably the first face I've noticed was Jefferson Hack, who (in a flawlessly cut suit) also looked the best. Many of the attendees were sporting very similar looks (sartorially prime, though) - blazers, tapered, shortened or rolled-up chinos or jeans, dapper hair, dark shades. Among them were the more noticeable ones, two examples for all, one guy in a Prada banana shirt and a platinum-dyed girl in a silver Miu Miu leather jacket (yes, that one). Not as much fun in real life as in Tommy Ton's pictures (who was also present), to tell the truth.

Simple, smooth, natural colors. These bags scream style.

Music. Voilà, the show started. It all happened so quickly, almost in the blink of an eye! Models (who I thought could not look any more perfect, but hell they diiiiid) were like in no time passing by each other onto the venue coming out and back into a large installation of piled Vuitton suitcases decorated with a new logo. What I've learned from this single show is that if you want to fully enjoy the action, you should not make any silly efforts to document the show - just like I did. Freaking bad idea. Just sit there, fan with your invitation card because it's hot (not as much as the boys but still), stand up when you can't see the shoes and soak up the atmosphere, sense the new trends coming out and feel the pride of being where you are. Yeah.

At the end, Marc Jacobs with Kim Jones made a brief appearance, later followed by half of the pack of greedy editors to the backstage. Kanye West was there (notes: gang buds, gold chains galore, smug). Michael Stipe was there (note: styliiish!) and Lily Allen was there (note: so beautiful!!!). Veni, vidi, I went back to the airport (via Colette which was unfortunately awfully disappointing).

Army of shoes.

Sweet, but what is the actual collection about? A fresh, well-balanced airy mix of easy-to-wear classics, lightweight sportswear reminiscent of the upcoming Summer Olympics, all linked up with Africa, where Jones grew up and of course, travel and luxury, Vuitton's DNA. It felt genuinely young and somewhat unpretentious that even I, possibly for the first time ever, fell for LV menswear for real!

I want to thank all the great people who made this terrific experience happen to me!

Sweden’s dense boreal forest has a new addition to its mass of 140-year-old pines: seven beautifully incongruous structures that constitute Treehotel, an innovative project conceived by husband and wife team Britta Jonsson-Lindvall and Kent Lindvall. Treehotel was inspired by Swedish indie director Jonas Selberg Augustsén’s 2008 eco-documentary Trädälskaren (the Tree Lover), which followed a group of friends who break free from their mundane jobs and take to the woods, building their own tree house home. The Lindvalls’ forest dwellings are far from textbook in style—you'd be forgiven for mistaking "The Mirror Cube," for example, for a minor work of conceptual art—and have been created by some of Sweden’s most cutting-edge architects, including Bertil Harström and Tham & Videgård. The seven room-size dwellings also include “The Bird’s Nest,” a circular pod covered in twisted branches, and “The Blue Cone,” a miniaturized house with a pitched roof that appears to be built entirely of Lego. Each house is powered by sustainable electricity and is attached to its respective tree via a metal clamp (adjustable to fit the tree as it continues to grow) rather than with screws and nails.
